Discipleship is the intentional, lifelong process of following Jesus Christ, learning his teachings, and being transformed by the Holy Spirit to become more like him. It involves growing in faith, obeying God’s Word, and making other disciples through mentoring, relationships, and service.
What is Discipleship and Accountability? Most people don’t know the true definition of the words “Discipleship” and “Accountability.” We’ve heard the example of Jesus and His twelve disciples in the Bible, and yes, that’s the principle I’ll be writing about in this article. When hearing the words Discipleship and Accountability, they may seem like overwhelming Christian terms, but really, they are principles and terms used throughout the Bible. The act of discipleship, or being discipled, is described in many ways.
First, we are to be discipled by Jesus Christ; this is a purpose-driven, lifelong process to live as Jesus Christ lived. Jesus lived a life to please His Father in heaven. Being discipled by the example of the life of Jesus starts by acknowledging our sinful nature, accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior, and experiencing a transformation from our sinful ways to a life in which we become more like him, living under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. This transformation involves living by God’s commandments, walking in faith, obeying the Word of God, and making disciples, as Jesus commissioned.
The second aspect of discipleship, (having a discipleship partner,) is accountability. Accountability is the act of being accountable for your actions. In the discipleship partner relationship, you obligate yourself, your actions, and your decisions to your partner. Before and after making the decision, you ask for their wisdom, knowledge, and prayers about the actions or decision you’re making so they can help and assist you in the decision-making process. Your accountability partner also helps you to handle correcting a mistake or a bad decision. The Bible describes this form of discipling: “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another” Proverbs 27:17 NIV. The principle is that only Iron can sharpen iron. Your discipleship partner will be a mature peer or a seasoned older adult who can understand where you are and what you struggle with.
In the Great Commission (Mark 16:15-16, Matt 28:19-20), Jesus sent the disciples, two by two, to “go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.” Having Mutual support, someone to collaborate with, companionship, a person who can lift you up in prayer. Jesus knew that two people stand stronger as a team than if they stood alone. Scripture states, “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor” Ecclesiastes 4:9-10). “If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up”. This principle was also noted in the Garden of Eden when God made Eve, scripture states: “The man gave names to all the livestock and to the birds of the air, and to every animal of the field; but for Adam there was not found a helper [that was] suitable (a companion) for him. 21. So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam; and while he slept, He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. 22. And the rib which the Lord God had taken from the man He made (fashioned, formed) into a woman, and He brought her and presented her to the man, Genesis 2:20-22.
God knew the frailty of living life on your own or through a situation alone. Jesus knew the importance of sending the disciples out two by two. He knew the importance of discipleship to a person who needs a companion to be vulnerable with and a strong person they can trust to help establish their walk and relationship with God.
